Smurfit Westrock Covington Mill

104 W Riverside St Covington, VA 24426, United States

Since 1899, the Covington Mill has manufactured packaging papers while serving as a vital part of the western Virginia community.

The Covington Mill, located just three blocks from Main Street in downtown Covington, is home to more than 900 employees and has long been a cornerstone of the community. The mill manufactures kraft paper used in the production of paper-based packaging, supplying customers with high-quality products trusted across a range of industries.

Recent investments in the facility have strengthened the mill’s ability to operate efficiently, reliably, and sustainably while supporting long-term growth. By modernizing critical infrastructure, the mill continues to provide dependable supply to customers, contribute to the local and statewide economy, and maintain its position as one of the region’s most reliable employers.

More than just a manufacturing facility, the Covington Mill is deeply connected to the community it serves. Its impact extends beyond the mill’s walls, supporting local businesses, families, and the broader Alleghany Highlands region. These continued investments not only strengthen operations, but also reinforce confidence in the future of the community and the people who depend on it every day.

TICIT

Engaging Local Schools Through Sustainability Education

We are proud to participate in TICCIT (Trees Into Cartons, Cartons Into Trees), an award‑winning education program from the Paperboard Packaging Council (PPC) that teaches children about the role of trees in the environment and the sustainability of paper‑based packaging. At the end of each session, students plant a tree sapling in a paperboard carton filled with soil to take home and grow with their families.
STEM

Developing Young and Emerging Talent

We are committed to developing the next generation of skilled talent through a relaunched apprenticeship program in partnership with the Commonwealth of Virginia and Mountain Gateway Community College. The program provides hands‑on training in advanced maintenance and technical roles at the mill, alongside state‑certified coursework. By combining real‑world experience with formal education, the apprenticeship creates meaningful career pathways for employees and helps retain emerging talent in the local community.
