For 60 years, the Mahrt Mill has produced packaging paper while supporting the economy, families and communities of Alabama's Chattahoochee Valley.

Located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in Cottonton, Alabama, Smurfit Westrock's Mahrt Mill has been producing paper for six decades. Since operations began in 1966, the mill has grown into one of the region's largest employers and an important contributor to the local economy, supporting communities across Alabama and Georgia.

Mahrt produces a range of paper grades used to create sustainable consumer and commercial packaging. These products help supply customers across North America and support essential industries through reliable, high-quality paper solutions. The mill's success is built on the expertise and dedication of its workforce, with many employees representing multiple generations of local families.

The mill's commitment extends beyond its operations. Employees volunteer their time and expertise to support local schools, civic organizations and community initiatives throughout the Chattahoochee Valley region. Investing in Future Talent

Career tenure at Smurfit Westrock Mahrt mill can measure in decades, and often in generations. That continuity is why the mill also invests early in the talent pipeline. Whether it’s an apprentice placed through the Manufacturing Institute’s FAME program, co-op partnerships with multiple universities, or its hands-on work to raise awareness of manufacturing careers with students in local high schools and colleges, the mill emphasizes safety and innovation when developing its workforce, ultimately equipping it for long term success.

Supporting Education and Community Growth

Smurfit Westrock Mahrt supports more than a dozen organizations across the Chattahoochee Valley region, helping create educational and economic opportunities in the communities it serves.  The mill invests in school systems in Eufaula, Phenix City, Russell County, Barbour County and Stewart County. One example is a Smurfit Westrock Foundation grant supporting the redesign and modernization of the Dyer Family STEM Center, a leading hub for science, technology, engineering and mathematics education within Phenix City Schools.  Additional investments support organizations including Chattahoochee Valley Community College, programs administered by the Sparks Foundation, the Jimmy Rane Foundation and the East Alabama Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Giving Back Where We Live and Work

Smurfit Westrock Mahrt employees play an active role in strengthening the communities where they live and work. Through our 'Unboxing Good Matching Gifts' and 'Grants for Volunteers programs', employee volunteer hours and charitable donations unlock additional company funding for local nonprofit organizations. As a result, employees help provide increased support to organizations such as United Way, Feeding the Valley, the American Heart Association, Habitat for Humanity and local schools, multiplying their impact across the region. The mill also opens its doors to the community. Leadership Barbour cohorts tour the site as part of their curriculum, and mill leaders serve as board members and contributors to civic organizations across the region.
