Bag-in-Box® solution streamlines marine cleaning supply packaging

Masava Chemi After
Helping a manufacturer of cleaning products for ships sail towards sustainable packaging

Masava Kemi, a producer of maritime cleaning products, needed a more efficient and sustainable alternative to bulky plastic containers. The solution was a UN-certified Bag-in-Box® system, designed to safely handle hazardous liquids while reducing plastic waste, saving space, and cutting port handling costs.

The Challenge

Masava Kemi, a manufacturer of cleaning products specifically for the shipping industry, sought a more sustainable way to pack its products. The challenge was to replace rigid plastic containers, which when empty, took up valuable space and incurred handling costs at the harbour. This often resulted in them being thrown overboard, littering our oceans.

The Approach

Our team recommended a Bag-in-Box® solution suitable for dispensing bulk liquids. The outer box was made from solid board, which can withstand wet conditions, and the bag was specifically selected for detergents with varying acidity levels. The final solution was then tested and UN-certified as approved packaging for the safe transportation of dangerous goods.

The Result

The Bag-in-Box® solution allowed Masava Kemi to achieve its sustainability goal of phasing out rigid plastic packaging. Once empty, the new solution can be flattened and properly disposed of, helping to keep our oceans free from plastics. Additionally, valuable storage space is no longer taken up with empty containers, and handling costs at the harbour have been eliminated. Supply chain efficiencies were also achieved, with a pallet of empty Bag-in-Box packs holding 900 units versus 60 of the plastic containers.
