Supporting Procomin switch from plastic to paper sacks

See how we generated savings for Procomin, a non-metallic mineral company, with sustainable packaging

Procomin, a Colombian mineral company, partnered with Smurfit Kappa to replace its imported plastic sacks with durable, FSC-certified paper alternatives. The new packaging reduced Procomin’s working capital needs by 85%, improved sustainability by cutting plastic use by over 70%, and boosted brand visibility with high-quality printed designs—all while allowing more flexible, smaller order quantities.

Procomin Plastic Sacks

The Challenge

Procomin, a non-metallic mineral company in Colombia, was using polypropylene sacks for the processing and distribution of their products. They imported a minimum of 100,000 every five months for which they had to allocate the working capital. In addition, the graphic design of the polypropylene sack was not easily visible in stock, and was not appealing for the consumer.

The Approach

We developed a high-end durable and sustainable paper sack alternative to polypropylene. The new sack is strong enough to hold 50 kilos with a minimum order of just 10,000 imported sacks per month, and Procomin is no longer tied to large imports.

The Result

With a delivery agreement of 10,000 paper sacks per month, we were able to reduce Procomin’s required working capital by 85%. They have already replaced over 70% of their plastic packaging with paper and the 100% sustainable paper sacks are printed with eye-catching branding for the consumer.
