Smurfit Westrock launches prototype of glueline-free packaging solution

ActiBluTM removes the need for glue in the assembly of packaging

Smurfit Westrock has unveiled ActiBlu™, a breakthrough prototype solution designed to eliminate the need for traditional gluelines in paper-based packaging, marking a significant step forward in simplicity, efficiency and sustainability.

ActiBlu is an adhesive applied during the production of the packaging, removing the need for glue application when the box is closed. It is activated by a fine mist of water and seals immediately.

ActiBlu was introduced during the company’s 2026 Innovation Event in the Netherlands, which brought together over 450 customers, partners and innovation leaders from across multiple industries to explore the role of how Artificial Intelligence, sustainability and design are shaping the future of paper-based packaging innovation.

Speaking at the event, Arco Berkenbosch, Chief Innovation Officer at Smurfit Westrock, said: “ActiBlu simplifies the packing process for our customers. The transition to the solution requires a modification from glue application to spraying a fine mist of water on packing lines, reducing operational complexity while maintaining performance.”

Beyond efficiency, ActiBlu uses up to 60% less adhesive than traditional hot-melt gluing, supporting brands’ sustainability ambitions and helping to meet evolving regulatory requirements, including PPWR, through improved recyclability. 

ActiBlu is now in the pilot phase with Smurfit Westrock working closely with partners to test and fine-tune the solution in operational environments, refining it further based on customer feedback.

Smurfit Westrock’s 2026 Innovation Event also saw the introduction of three industry-leading AI based tools, designed to improve packaging performance on shelf and across the supply chain, all built on insights from millions of real-world market data points.
