Advancing social-emotional education in Colombia

In Yumbo, Valle del Cauca, the Smurfit Westrock Foundation supported the implementation of the Social, Emotional and Ethical Learning Program (SEE Learning). The initiative aims to strengthen student-school relationships and support the holistic development of children through social-emotional education.

SEE Learning addresses local challenges related to mental health and educational quality while helping teachers build new skills and approaches in the classroom. Through the program, students develop social-emotional skills and teachers increase their abilities to create positive learning environments.

In its first year, 150 students participated in SEE Learning sessions. Smurfit Westrock employees supporting planning and facilitating the activities, helping to deliver a meaningful experience for all who participated.

Originally developed by Emory University, SEE Learning was adapted for the Colombian context with support from the Levapan Foundation, a nonprofit organization with over 60 years of experience in social and educational projects in Valle del Cauca. The Smurfit Westrock Foundation played a key role in bringing the program to Yumbo by providing  resources and coordinating implementation with the Levapan Foundation. The Municipal Education Secretariat of Yumbo is also a program partner.
