Building Community Through Play

Forty Smurfit Westrock volunteers contributed more than 400 hours over three days to build a new playground for nearly 500 students at Meadowbrook Elementary, a Title I school in Fort Worth, Texas.

Funded by the Smurfit Westrock Foundation, the new student-designed KABOOM! playspace replaced a 20-year-old playground that proved challenging for students with differing abilities. The state-of-the-art space includes play structures for children of all abilities, accessible seating and a sidewalk connecting the school building to the playground. The play surface is also rubberized, making it easier to navigate.

The KABOOM! playground is not only a safe and inclusive space for students of all abilities to play with their friends, it also provides a place for residents to enjoy outdoor time outside school hours, fostering a sense of community pride, well-being and connection. Thank you to our Dallas-Fort Worth colleagues for joining the Smurfit Westrock Foundation to help ensure more children have equitable access to quality outdoor playspaces.
