Smurfit Westrock Foundation funds new sensory room at Claire House Children's Hospice in the UK

Since opening in 1998 to support just 10 families, Claire House Children’s Hospice has grown into one of the leading providers of palliative care for babies, children, and young adults across North West England. Today, the hospice supports more than 400 families, helping seriously and terminally ill children live life to the fullest by creating meaningful experiences and bringing a sense of normality to family life.

Claire House offers expert nursing and end-of-life care, alongside vital emotional support, guiding families through some of the most difficult times imaginable. Smurfit Westrock is proud to support this important work. Most recently, a €38,000 donation from the Smurfit Westrock Foundation funded a brand-new, fully accessible sensory room at the hospice’s Wirral site. This immersive space provides a calm and engaging environment, designed to enhance the wellbeing and quality of life of the children and young people who use it.

This achievement builds on a long-standing partnership. Since first volunteering at Claire House’s Splash Dash 5K run in 2019, colleagues from Smurfit Westrock’s Liverpool office have shown incredible dedication. Together, they have contributed over 400 volunteer hours and raised more than £30,000 through fundraising activities such as marathons, walks, raffles, quizzes, cake sales—and even an egg-and-spoon race.

These efforts have been championed by Claire Downey, Office Manager at Smurfit Westrock Shared Services in Liverpool, and embraced by colleagues across the team, reflecting a strong commitment to supporting the local community. With further volunteering and fundraising planned for 2026, this partnership continues to grow.

Together, we are helping Claire House create meaningful moments for the children and families who need them most.
