Expanding the Smurfit Westrock Community Centre in Mexico
The Smurfit Westrock Community Centre in Mexico opened a new building dedicated to education and development. Built with support from the Smurfit Westrock Foundation and Smurfit Westrock Mexico, the expansion includes classrooms, multipurpose spaces, a science lab, library, dance studio and areas for study and psychological support.
In 2024, we held a “first stone” (groundbreaking) ceremony in the presence of Micheál Martin, Tánaiste of the Government of Ireland, State of Mexico authorities, and Jorge Angel, CEO of Smurfit Westrock Mexico. Together, they unveiled a plaque and laid the foundation stone – marking the start of a new chapter for the community.
With these additions, the facility can now serve more than 800 children and youth – reaching an estimated 3,200 family members in the surrounding community. By providing programs that span from early childhood to young adulthood, the expansion strengthens access to education and support services that help students build brighter futures.
