Making access to drinking water a reality for families in Colombia
Near our corrugated facility in Barbosa, Antioquia Colombia is the rural community of Vallecitos, a mountainous and forested area known for its natural beauty and as a popular destination for hiking and outdoor activities. The community leaders there recently faced the challenge of completing an aqueduct that would provide access to drinking water for its almost 2,500 residents.
Smurfit Westrock stepped in to support the completion of the civil works project and to secure its functionality long-term. Along with providing the materials, our team built a concrete slab, fabricated a metal structure with thermoacoustic roofing, and installed the electrical connection. It also provided the pump to supply water to the main storage tanks.
Now completed, more than 860 families now have reliable access to drinking water, and the initiative strengthened collaboration between the company and the community, showing what can be accomplished when we work together.
“This project is very beautiful and, above all, very important for the community of Vallecitos, because it brings life to many people by allowing more water to reach the main tank with the new pump,” said Luis Alberto Valencia, Pulp Preparation Operator at the Mill Plant and resident of Vallecitos.
Smurfit Westrock has a deep commitment to supporting the communities in which we live and work and championing the vulnerable. Each year our employees continue to generously give their time, energy, and expertise, to empower communities, encourage wellbeing and inspire future generations.
