Promoting Quality Rural Education in Colombia
In the municipality of El Tambo, Cauca, the Smurfit Westrock Foundation and the Forestry Division there worked hand-in-hand with the local community to strengthen the quality of education for young students in the rural community. The project expanded the Institución Educativa El Recuerdo School.
Improvements included the construction of four new classrooms, 270 square meters of educational infrastructure, and accessible sanitary facilities, providing dignified and safe spaces for students. In addition to the infrastructure investment, Smurfit Westrock employees volunteered by supervising and supporting community engagement activities throughout the project, strengthening our connection with the school and community.
The initiative supported school retention and greater equity in access to education. It also created future opportunities for nearly 600 students in the region, furthering our commitment to the development of the local communities where we operate.
