Reducing anxiety for children undergoing medical procedures in Italy

Thanks to the Smurfit Westrock Foundation, Italian nonprofit La Nostra Famiglia designed and created an immersive, underwater environment at Eugenio Media Scientific Institute in Bosisio Parini to help children receiving medical procedures. The project called “Dive Into the Blue” transformed a medical diagnostic space into a colorful, underwater world that helps children feel more relaxed and less anxious. Through imaginative wall designs, soothing lights, and interactive marine-themed visuals, the space creates a calming atmosphere to help children feel safe, curious, and engaged during MRI scans.

Families and medical staff have already noticed a remarkable difference in young patients receiving care because of the experience. The soothing environment not only improves the emotional wellbeing of children but also facilitates smoother, faster examinations by reducing the need for sedation or repeated scans.

The Smurfit Westrock Foundation contributed €30,000 to make the project a reality, benefiting approximately 3000 young patients who come from across the country to receive medical care.
