Restoring Smiles in Peru
Smurfit Westrock employees in Peru joined forces with Operación Sonrisa to restore smiles, confidence and opportunities to both children and adults suffering from cleft lip and palate. The birth defect often requires multiple surgeries—a major hardship for families who cannot afford them. Operación Sonrisa (Operation Smile) provides reconstructive surgeries to people around the world to repair the palate and/or lip at no cost.
Employees played an active and compassionate role by supporting medical pre-evaluations and accompanying patients and their families during surgeries. They even created superhero capes for the children to ease fears and help them go into surgery with courage and joy. Volunteers also participated in awareness activities to learn more about the issues surrounding cleft palate and surgical reconstruction.
40 beneficiaries received surgeries, giving their families an enormous sense of relief. Additionally, the Smurfit Westrock Foundation contributed over €25,000 to the cause, and 40 employees dedicated approximately 200 hours of volunteer work, strengthening ties with local schools, authorities and healthcare centers.
