Partnering to increase recycling and decrease landfill waste in Brazil

Like many around the world, the Brazilian residents of Canoinhas, Santa Catarina have the ability to recycle waste on certain days through their regular waste collection program. However, they didn’t have a convenient way to recycle items at any time or recycle items such as electronics, batteries, and light bulbs. That’s why the Canoinhas Department of Environment partnered with Smurfit Westrock to create Ecopoint, a recycling point with 24/7 access.

The 24-hour recycling bin project expanded the resources available for the correct disposal of waste, and it promotes environmental education. Although Canoinhas has a structured selective collection program, the absence of an accessible and permanent point made it difficult for the population to more thoroughly participate in circular and sustainable practices. The Department of Environment designed the project and partnered with Smurfit Westrock to provide the infrastructure.

“The word of the day is gratitude to Smurfit Westrock for looking with affection on the people who live around your company, that you are not here looking for numbers, and that for me is being sustainable,” said Canoinhas Mayor Juliana Maciel.

Since its inauguration in 2025, Ecopoint has collected over three tons of material, contributing to the preservation of soil and water, strengthening the local recycling chain and engaging the community in environmental actions. Plans are now underway to expand Ecopoint to other municipalities, further strengthening the region’s commitment to sustainability.
