Transforming mattress packaging to boost brand visibility and sustainability

Facing rising competitive pressures and ambitious sustainability goals, Indufoam needed a packaging solution that would reduce costs, strengthen its brand presence, and improve product presentation. Smurfit Westrock developed a high-impact corrugated packaging solution that replaced plastic packaging, enhanced product visibility, and helped the company expand into new international markets.

The Challenge

Indufoam, a bedding manufacturer in Latin America, was facing reduced competitiveness due to increased prices in raw materials, a complex manufacturing operation and low-cost imports from Asia. The use of plastic packaging meant that their sustainability goals were not being met, product visibility was low at the point of sale, and existing graphics were not visible.

The Approach

A sustainable solution was required which would deliver cost savings, capture consumers' attention, and effectively communicate its premium brand. We created a striking pre-printed sustainable pack that clearly showed the product’s features. The corrugated pack has a large area for high-graphic printing and features an opening so the product can be viewed before purchase.

The Result

The 100% sustainable pack is environmentally friendly, and the rigid design has improved the handling of the product. Not only has it provided greater protection compared to the original plastic zipper bag, but it has increased the printable area by 40% enabling Indufoam to showcase their brand. The improved packaging has enabled Indufoam to enter new international markets such as South Africa, and furthermore, they have enjoyed a 10% reduction in operating costs.
