Hands in the Garden

Hands in the Garden

Organic waste from the papermaking process, like pulp and paper mill sludge (PPMS), can be used for other purposes. At our mill in Tres Barras, Brazil, it’s composted and used to make a high-value soil amendment (Ecosolo®) that’s given to local farmers. Our Hands in the Garden program began promoting these sustainable practices in schools by creating educational gardens.

Some colleagues from Três Barras volunteered their time and expertise to prepare the soil and plant the gardens at the Francisco Rocha Municipal School, using Ecosolo and recycled pallets from the mill. In this hands-on learning experience, the group guided  students aged four and five in planting various vegetables and herbs. The activity showed them the connection between the value of byproducts, material reuse and the environment.

“The garden not only beautifies our school, but also nourishes the dreams, values, and learning of future generations,” said School Teacher Ariane Maciel. “I would like to express our sincere gratitude for all the dedication, collaboration, and support for our school unit.”

The garden space will continue to educate more than 200 students at the school, promoting environmental education, teamwork and healthy eating while connecting them with nature. With the success of the project, team members in Três Barras are now evaluating other schools to be included in future phases of the Hands in the Garden program.
