Using Mill Byproducts to Support Sustainable Farming

Smurfit Westrock’s Stevenson, Alabama pulp and paper mill in the U.S. plays an important role in sustainable agriculture. The facility’s manufacturing byproducts are well suited for recycling and reuse as agricultural soil amendments. With appropriate processing and application, these materials enhance soil quality by contributing nutrient-rich organic matter, improving soil structure, increasing water retention and facilitating pH balance.

The mill supplies local farmers with wood ash at no cost, supporting the agricultural community. Because the facility operates year‑round, farmers have access to a consistent, local source of organic material. This reduces transportation distances and costs, as well as their dependence on seasonal compost or manure availability. Farmers test field soils before application to determine the amount of ash that should be applied based on the needs of a specific crop.

The Stevenson mill also applies wastewater treatment residuals to Company-owned land, which makes the fields fertile for use in growing crops. Smurfit Westrock leases that land to a local farmer who uses it to cultivate soybeans or corn used for cattle feed. The facility uses a field rotation strategy to maintain healthy soil and increase yields, as well as support biodiversity.

These collaborative efforts with area farmers promote sustainable land management. Farmers benefit from affordable soil enhancement solutions, the mill reduces waste and the broader community enjoys improved soil health and greater sustainability in land use.
