Creating a sustainable, insulated packaging solution for high-quality beef ecommerce delivery

Butcher Base, a Czech retailer of premium, ethically sourced beef, needed sustainable packaging to keep meat chilled during delivery. Smurfit Westrock developed a recyclable, paper-based solution with Hexacomb insulation that maintains cold temperatures for up to eight hours. The design offers strong thermal protection and a user-friendly unboxing experience, aligning with Butcher Base’s environmentally conscious values.

The Challenge

Butcher Base is an online retailer specialising in premium beef sourced exclusively from Czech farms that adhere to high standards of animal welfare and sustainability. The challenge was to design an insulated ecommerce package that could keep the beef chilled during transit while also reflecting their commitment to sustainability.

The Approach

Our team of experts developed a 100% paper-based packaging solution, consisting of a corrugated cardboard box with six hexacomb inserts that insulates the pack from all sides. The design is user-friendly, making it easy for consumers to open and can be conveniently recycled through standard household cardboard recycling systems after use.

The Result

The new ecommerce packaging is not only made from renewable and recyclable fibres but is also insulated to keep the beef chilled for up to 8 hours. The printed packaging has become an integral part of the brand, creating a positive experience that customers look forward to receiving time and time again.
