To commemorate the 50th batch of its La Trappe Quadrupel Oak Aged beer, Royal Swinkels Brewery sought a packaging solution that reflected both the beer's rich heritage and its commitment to sustainability. The Challenge

Royal Swinkels, a Dutch family brewery with over 300 years of tradition, sought an innovative, sustainable packaging solution for the 50th batch of its iconic La Trappe Quadrupel Oak Aged beer. Fermented in whiskey barrels, the beer called for packaging that reflected its luxury and heritage—without relying on traditional materials like wood or metal.

The Approach

Smurfit Westrock took on the challenge, producing a corrugated cardboard pack that mimics the look and feel of a wooden whiskey barrel. Through detailed finishing techniques—embossing, relief, and gold foil—they created exclusive, premium packaging. Made from responsibly sourced, renewable paper fiber and fully recyclable, it supports Royal Swinkels' circular sustainability goals.

The Result

The packaging combines innovative design with a premium appearance, all crafted from sustainable paper-based materials. Bevelled edges and a woodgrain texture on the side panels subtly reference the whiskey barrels in which the beer matures, underscoring its artisanal character. This packaging is a strong example of how luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand.
