Libanius Pita Bread partnered with Smurfit Westrock to transform its packaging, targeting both sustainability and operational efficiency. The previous packaging design posed challenges including excessive components, complicated assembly, and instability during transport. By integrating innovative structural features, the new solution reduced waste, improved recyclability, and enhanced product visibility on retail shelves. This collaboration not only streamlined the supply chain but also increased Libanius’ retail appeal.

The Challenge

Libanius Pita Bread, headquartered in Querétaro, Mexico, had been using a three-piece package consisting of a tray, divider and lid that required plastic tape and complex assembly. This structure created inefficiencies across the supply chain and caused instability during stacking and transportation, leading to product damage and poor shelf presence at retail. Additionally, the design hindered operational efficiency and sustainability objectives due to excess materials and assembly time.

The Approach

Working collaboratively with Libanius to test a handful of solutions, our structural packaging designers engineered a new solution that integrated the necessary inserts directly into the tray, eliminating unnecessary components and replacing plastic tape with top and bottom structural locks that help seal the tray.

The Result

• New design optimized structural performance for better retail presentation, secure stacking, simplified assembly and enhanced product visibility.

• Sustainability was improved through material optimization, improved recyclability and the elimination of plastic tape.
