Walkers cuts 250 tonnes of plastic per year with new multipack packaging

Walkers Crisps Box
Helping Walkers switch to sustainable packaging, eliminating 250 tonnes of plastic per year.

Walkers, a leading UK crisp brand, replaced its plastic multipack sleeves with a 100% paper-based corrugated box for 22- and 24-count packs. The switch eliminated around 250 tonnes of plastic annually, improved pallet efficiency, sped up distribution, and strengthened the brand’s sustainability profile—while also enhancing shelf appeal and sparking positive consumer response.

Walker Multi-Pack Plastic Packaging

The Challenge

PepsiCo-owned Walkers is a leading UK crisp brand aiming to reduce the 660 million plastic pack bags it produces per year. Our challenge was to replace the outer plastic packaging on their 22- & 24- multipacks with a new sustainable cardboard alternative. The solution had to meet the retailers' needs, the consumers' high expectations of the brand and optimise supply chain efficiencies.

The Approach

Our Better Planet Packaging design team and technical experts worked collaboratively with PepsiCo and their machine manufacturers to develop a paper-based concept. We carried out a full supply chain analysis using our SupplySmart service to calculate the logistical benefits of moving to the new cardboard pack.

The Result

By switching the outer packaging to cardboard on the 22 and 24 multipacks, Walkers removes 250 tonnes of plastic from its supply chain each year, increases pallet load and deliver a faster and more efficient process. The new sustainable solution has improved in-store visual impact, strengthened Walkers' sustainable brand image and has received positive engagement through social media.
