Delivering savings on Medovnik’s octagonal cake box

Medovník Cake
How we delivered some sweet savings on Medovnik's octagonal cake box

Medovnik Original, a maker of a beloved honey cake sold across European retailers, partnered with Smurfit Westrock to redesign its octagonal cake box, cutting CO₂ emissions by 56% and assembly time by 12 seconds without losing shelf appeal.

The Challenge

Medovnik Original produces the much-loved honey cake, which is sold in multiple retail chains across Europe. While the octagonal box looked appealing on shelf, the structural design was poor. We recognised the inefficient shape of the die-cut pack had to be generating a large amount of board wastage during the production process and incurring unnecessary costs.

The Approach

We proactively approached Medovnik with a new design to achieve the same appearance on shelf, but with significant manufacturing and packing improvements. The new compact design allowed double the amount of packs to be cut from the same amount of corrugated board, and each pack took 12 seconds less time to assemble.

The Result

Not only did the new design result in material savings and a faster packing process, but we helped Medovnik achieve a 56% reduction in CO2 emissions. This equates to saving 29 tonnes of carbon by reducing their material and transport consumption. Medovnik was delighted with the unexpected savings from the significantly improved pack, especially when taking into account that it looks exactly the same from a consumer perspective.
