Premium packaging helps Ron Bermudez celebrate 170 years of heritage

To mark its 170th anniversary, Ron Bermudez sought a premium packaging solution that would elevate two flagship rum brands and strengthen its presence in high-value retail channels. Smurfit Westrock developed sophisticated, high-impact packaging featuring premium finishes and distinctive design elements that enhanced brand identity, celebrated the company's heritage, and supported its growth ambitions.

The Challenge

Ron Bermudez, a Dominican Republic rum born over 150 years ago, boasts the country's oldest ageing cellars. For its 170th anniversary, the company sought to revamp the packaging of Ron Don Armando and Ron Aniversario. The task was to create two premium packs within three months to enhance market share in vital sales channels like airport duty free shops.

The Approach

Our El Salvador plant's packaging engineering and pre-press teams created the artwork for the new design. By utilising double-wall cardboard, metallic printing, embossing, and contrasting varnishes, we achieved a premium, textured finish. The box's tones were meticulously matched with the bottle's vignette, enhancing product identity and providing a cohesive look and feel.

The Result

With this new premium packaging, Ron Bermudez is aiming to achieve a 20% market share increase by 2023 in the niche of Gran Reserva Rums, predominantly sold in airports and exclusive boutique shops. The Ron Bermudez team was delighted with the timely delivery of the impressive box from our facility in El Salvador to the Dominican Republic, ensuring a successful celebration of their momentous 170th anniversary.
