The new design features a two-piece system: an outer transit box and a square insert with a central hole to secure the rolled collars. This approach optimizes space, reduces material use, and allows for smaller items to be stored inside the collars. Made from recyclable paper-based fibers, the packaging supports Vetnordic’s commitment to sustainability.

The Challenge

Vetnordic, a Danish veterinary supplier, needed an efficient way to package its new cone-shaped pet collars. Packing the larger cone collars flat would have required oversized boxes, wasting both materials and storage space. Instead, Vetnordic sought a compact, functional and sustainable solution that fit three collar sizes while optimizing shipping and warehouse space.

The Approach

A two-piece solution was developed, with an outer transit box and an innovative square insert with a central hole to secure the rolled collars. Smurfit Westrock helped refine the design and bring the project to life. The design reduces packaging size while freeing up space inside the collars for smaller items. A marking system on the packaging makes collar sizes easy to identify, streamlining logistics and improving storage efficiency in veterinary clinics.

The Result

The final solution optimizes material use and maximizes space efficiency compared to the flat-pack design alternative. By using the hollow space inside rolled collars, Vetnordic can stack them efficiently, making the most of the available packaging space. The insert also serves a dual purpose: protecting the collars during transit and functioning as a reusable, compact storage solution in vet clinics. Made from recyclable paper-based fibers, it supports Vetnordic’s commitment to sustainability.
