Smart design delivers efficient, brand-ready beer bottle packaging
Smurfit Westrock Gdańsk in Poland, partnered with longtime customer Amber Brewery to develop a new multipack solution that combines efficiency, product protection and strong shelf appeal. Building on years of collaboration, the project focused on creating a simple, economical and visually engaging pack for three beer bottles and a glass that supports both operational needs and brand presentation.

The Challenge

Amber Brewery required a packaging solution that would enable fast manual packing, ensure safe transport and promote the brand at the point of sale. The multipack needed to securely hold three beer bottles and a glass — products with different shapes and diameters — without compromising stability or increasing material use. In addition, the design had to be palletizable, easy for consumers to carry and quick to assemble without the use of tape or glue, while keeping overall packaging costs low.

The Approach

The design team worked closely with the client to understand both technical needs and visual goals, while reviewing similar packaging already on the market. Using the ShelfSmart tool, the team studied existing multipacks to identify what worked well and where improvements could be made. Special attention was given to keeping the bottles and glass properly separated to prevent damage during shipping. The final layout placed each item side by side with efficient spacing to ensure a secure fit without adding bulk. After reviewing options with the client, the team recommended a transport box that had already been tested internally and was proven to be easy to assemble and handle.

The Result

The final design features a single-point glued construction that securely holds three beer bottles and a glass. A double separator at the bottom, combined with additional support at the top, provides excellent product stability during transport. Integrated handles on both sides allow consumers to safely and comfortably carry the pack from store to home. The packaging is simple and quick to assemble, a key advantage for manual packing operations, and can be transported on standard pallets. Minimal material use reduces waste and packaging costs, while window cutouts showcase the contents, delivering a strong visual impact and effective brand presentation on the shelf.
